Celtic turn to England to solve defensive problems

Celtic have been linked with an interest in Lee Buchanan as they try to create competition at left-back.

The Derby defender is in the final year of his contract with prospects bleak at the Championship side as they try to cope with transfer restrictions imposed by the EFL.

Greg Taylor has been the main in possession so far this season but it is unlikely that Boli Bolingoli will be providing much competition to the former Kilmarnock defender.

Picking up on Celtic’s transfer activities the Daily Record reports:

Celtic are keeping tabs on Derby defender Lee Buchanan. Parkhead boss Ange Postecoglou is hunting fresh faces with an extensive list of potential targets drawn up for various positions.

Derby right-back Nathan Byrne is already under consideration and Record Sport understands his Pride Park colleague has also caught scouts’ attention.

The 20-year-old left-back was outstanding for Wayne Rooney’s side last term and can also operate in the centre-back position.

Buchanan is subject of interest from Nottingham Forest who have been first off the mark with reports south of the border claiming a £1.2 million bid from the City Ground has already been kicked out.

If Derby are prepared to sell Buchanan there is likely to be strong competition for an England u-20 internationalist.

So far Ange Postecoglou hasn’t bought anyone from within the UK but with the domestic season less than a week away from starting Buchanan would be able to go straight into action without having to quarantine.

Last season Buchanan made 35 Championship appearances for Derby.
