Filip Helander has undergone knee surgery that will put him out of football for the foreseeable future.

The defender tried to run off a knock picked up early in the second half of Saturday’s match at St Johnstone but was stretchered off after pulling up.

Instantly it seemed to be a bad injury with Steven Gerrard confirming the news at the media conference for tomorrow’s Europa League match against Lyon.

Helander will be missing, he had had surgery in the last 24-48 hrs and will be missing for the foreseeable future.

I’ve not had a chance to speak to Fil post-surgery but I will do ASAP to see how he is mentally and physically. It is difficult to put a time on his return for now but it will be at least a few months.

With Nikola Katic on loan at Hadjuk Split and Jack Simpson left out of the Europa League squad Gerrard is left with Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun as the only options available for the six group stage matches.

Goldson has refused to sign a new contract but is expected to play tomorrow night after missing the St Johnstone match while self-isolating.

Ryan Jack is expected to resume full training in 7-10 days after undergoing knee surgery in March 2020.
