Riley McGree will cost Celtic an up front fee of £3m with potentially a further £2m in add-ons according to Sam Stejskal, the soccer reporter for The Athletic in the USA.

The official MLS website has quoted Stejskal’s tweets which seems to be about as close to an official stamp as you can get for the Daily Mail story from this morning.

It seems very likely that a transfer is well down the line after the midfielder’s loan spell at Birmingham City came to an end.

Charlotte FC of the MSL don’t appear to have any plans to use McGree which has brought Celtic to the table with Ange Postecoglou a long time admirer of the former Adelaide United prospect.

Completing the deal would give Postecoglou the option of playing an all-new midfield with Yosuke Ideguchi and Reo Hatate already signed up since the transfer window opened nine days ago.

The Celtic boss was pleased to get three transfers completed at the earliest opportunity and on Friday hinted that there was still more incoming business to be completed before the month is out.

The likely arrival of McGree puts further pressure on James McCarthy and Ismaila Soro although the Ivorian could be on his way out with clubs in the United States and Israel reportedly showing interest.
