A six letter name starting with J, O and N ahead of Kenny is enough to give some Celtic fans panic attacks.
Halfway through the nightmare 2020/21 season Celtic announced the signing of Jonjoe Kenny on loan from Everton. Like almost everything else last season it didn’t work out very well.
That Kenny arrived with a half decent pedigree, there was talk of a £5m transfer fee but even against SPFL opponents the on-loan Everton man struggled. Badly. His 16 appearances won’t be remembered fondly by the player or the fans that watched it unfold on live streams.
Tonight Celtic signed another Kenny. Teenager Johnny from Sligo Rovers on the back of an impressive debut season in the League of Ireland that finished last season in third place.
After the excitement of signing Celtic have to work out a plan to accelerate Kenny’s development, a five year contract is a strong commitment from both sides.
It is likely that Kenny will go into the Celtic B squad for the remainder of the Lowland League season, in pre-season things can be reassessed as player and club plot a route to first team football.
