John Beaton will referee Wednesday’s match between Hearts and Celtic at Tynecastle.

The Lanarkshire based whistler was in charge of the League Cup tie between the two clubs earlier this season and also the League Cup Final between Celtic and Hibs.

After the Hampden match Paul McGinn was given a two match suspension for describing Beaton as inept, it wasn’t in reference to the first half push and kick at Greg Taylor’s heel in the penalty box that was missed by the match referee.

Strangely, the Tynecastle match will be Beaton’s first Celtic SPFL match of the season, in contrast Bobby Madden has been handed five Celtic SPFL Premiership games, including the opening match of the season at Tynecastle.

Next week’s match could be the subject of a postponement request from Celtic. Tom Rogic is expected to be in the Australian World Cup squad with Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda waiting until Saturday to see if they are in the Japan squad for qualifiers on January 27 and February 1.

Alan Muir will be fourth official at Tynecastle.

No announcement has been made over who will referee the match against Dundee United on January 29 or the Glasgow derby four days later.
