Ten years after watching his beloved club slip into administration followed by liquidation in the mortuary of former football clubs Paul Murray has been rewriting history for the Daily Record.

The high-flying banker from the Borders is a True Blue, someone with his own best interests at heart as he enjoyed free access to the Blue Room as a director of the club from 2007 until Craig Whyte sussed him out four years later.

Every year Paul nodded through the accounts for the club without flagging up the need for contingency plans against any of the tax issues threatening the club.

Chairman Dave knew the danger, an initial asking price of £30m for the second most important institution in Scotland shrunk to £1 when Whyte took over in May 2011.

Paul whispered to his pal Keith at the Daily Record but as Ally McCoist’s side build up a 15 point lead by November 2011 no-one wanted to rock the boat.

McCoist’s failures against Malmo and Maribor had torpedoed hopes of reaching the group stage of the Champions League, HMRC had the Income Tax and National Insurance payments switched off. And 140 years of history died a death.

Part 4 of the Paul Murray Diaries is in tomorrow’s Daily Record.
