Unexpected twist emerges in Celtic loan deal

Osaze Urhoghide’s loan deal with Oostende includes a right to buy for the Belgian side.

Celtic signed the defender from Sheffield Wednesday in the summer but one year into his four year contract he could be on the move.

Oostende arranged a similar deal with Jack Hendry in the summer of 2020 and ensured that there was a similar clause in the deal that they completed yesterday with Celtic.

Dundee and Morecombe were both linked with taking the 21-year-old on loan but it seems that the player resisted those options to move to the Belgian club.

On the Oostende website their CEO, Gauthier Ganaye explained:

We have been following Osaze for quite some time so we are very pleased with his arrival. Moreover, we absolutely wanted to negotiate a purchase option because we firmly believe in his talent.

We try to avoid renting without a purchase option in our philosophy and I am therefore happy with the deal that we have obtained.

Of course, comparisons will now be made with Jack Hendry, but Osaze is a lot younger than Jack and above all still has a lot of progression margin.

At KVO we are known for making young players better and we now want to do the same with him. I’m looking forward to seeing him make his first minutes here.

Last summer Oostende signed Hendry on a permanent basis after a highly successful loan spell then sold him instantly for a profit to Club Brugge.

Celtic signed Urhoghide on July 1 having previously signed Liam Shaw on a pre-contract agreement from Sheffield Wednesday.

After something of an end of season exodus there was a need to get bodies into the club with Urhoghide playing at right-back and in central defence during the pre-season friendlies, starting with three matches from their Welsh training camp.

I don’t understand Celtics resoning on this. The boy has talent and should stay at Celtic Park. He has great potential as we saw against Real Betis.
