BBC Scotland airbrush over Bobby Madden’s penalty decision

In predictable fashion BBC Scotland are doing their best to airbrush Bobby Madden’s penalty decision at Dundee out of the spotlight. 

‘Little bit lucky’ and ‘they’re both at it’ is the extent of the coverage on the home page of football on the BBC Scotland website. More analysis was given to a throw-in that wasn’t awarded against Celtic two weeks earlier in their 3-1 win at Livingston. 

There is as much coverage of the Women’s Scottish League on the home page as there is to Madden’s penalty decision. The East Kilbride based referee has been in charge of three of the six away matches played by Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side in the SPFL in 2022.

No coverage was given to the three stoppages of play during Sunday’s Dundee match or the anti-Catholic signing from the away fans during the stoppages. Radio Scotland broadcast the match live. 

Two weeks earlier BBC Scotland were all over refereeing decisions, explaining how Celtic had benefitted twice from refereeing mistakes and that the award of a goal dispute by Jim Goodwin at Ibrox was actually correct.

BBC Scotland were recently forced to apologise to Celtic about a crass tweet from their chief sports writer, Tom English.
