As clear a caution as you’ll ever see- Two former SFA referees take Madden to task over Lundstram immunity

Des Roache and Steve Conroy both agree that John Lundstram committed four yellow card offences during Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final.

The Englishman escaped any punishment from Bobby Madden before being substituted in extra-time with his side being able to complete the match with all 11 players.

Despite failing to properly deal with four bookable offences Madden is still a top referee according to the podcasting duo.

Roache suggested that when he reviewed the match Madden will have realised that action should have been taken against Lundstram, all that we’ve heard from the East Kilbride based referee since Sunday has been self congratulations through Instagram posts.

Conroy, who refereed one Glasgow Derby in season 2009/10 goes into detail about the tactics that a referee will deploy for a particular fixture. The same Laws of the Game apply to every match, a booking offence in a match between Annan Athletic and Cowdenbeath gets the same punishment as in a Scottish Cup Semi-Final.

Des Roache:

I think that he was playing poker- going for a Five Card Tricks. How he avoided, not just, how he avoided being ordered off, staying on the pitch for as long as he did beggars belief. I’m sure on reflection when Bobby watched the match he would have seen that himself.

Now you take the very first instance, I understand Bobby trying to get a feel for the game, getting the game going, getting an acceptable limit of what he is going to put up with. That is maybe pushing it too far, if there is a foul in the first minute and there is a foul in the 89th minute there should be the same reprisals that come from it.

The incident of Joe Hart releasing the ball- that is as clear a caution as you are ever, ever going to see. There is no question, no debate.

From then to go on, only a short matter of minutes later for his challenge on Hatate, which occurred just inside the centre circle, again, a blatant yellow card. And for another one to come, I don’t know, we’ve just said that it’s not been Bobby’s best day.

In my opinion, John Lundstram, Rangers shouldn’t have had the option to bring him off as a substitute. John Lundstram should have been ordered off the field of play.

Steve Conroy:

We’ve discussed before, he’ll have set out his tactics before it, part of the tactics, often in a Celtic-Rangers game, especially a cup semi-final you’ll maybe let things go more than you would normally.

I agree with Des, a foul is a foul but sometimes you have to set the bar a wee bit higher in a Celtic-Rangers game but not so high that you are missing four, five. As clear a caution as you’ll ever see- Two former SFA referees take Madden to task over Lundstram immunity

And for him to escape another potential three your tactics come to an end at some point and you have to start dealing with it.

The podcast went on to highlight how Madden stopped Celtic to get treatment to Joe Aribo then soon after refused to stop play when Josip Juranovic.

After that they discuss the 117th minute free kick to Celtic then Madden quickly reversed.

You can talk to your blue in the face excuse the pun nothing will ever change till the Celtic board get of Thier bumsand do something about it

  • Tony B says:

The last part of this doesn’t even make any sense Joe, thereby diminishing your case, which by the way I totally agree with.

If you’re bevvied try posting when sober, if not, then you really need to proof read before sending out your thoughts.

This is sent with the best of intentions, since the huns will pounce on any weakness like the rats they are.

  • Joe says:

Give it arest guys! We lost because we never got going. Not because they were good, and certainly NOT because Madden caused the defeat!
Let’s face it, we lost to a very average side who had just come off a 120 minute march a few days earlier, yet it was US who looked tired throughout!
We went in over-confident. Of this I am certain. We are superior to them in every way, every position on the park, in the boardroom and on the terraces.
I see no problem going into a game with them confident, but we never got out of second gear throughout. This wasn’t Madden’s fault!
Sure, he as always showed them leniency and favour, but we have crushed them before with Madden in the middle!
We sucked big time and lost a very poor semi-final as a result.
Now let’s learn from this and wrap up this league in style!

Editor: You sound like you are looking for attention on BBC Scotland or Super Scoreboard. Madden made a number of very bad decisions on Sunday, they weren’t split between the two teams- how strange.

Lundstram escaped punishment FOUR TIMES, down to 10 men or with one fearing a red card the game works out differently.

Aribo injured stop Celtic playing on, Juranovic injured by the recently booked Aribo and it is play on.

Head to BBC or Super Scoreboard to explain and justify the 117th minute Turnbull free kick.

    • Stev says:

They went in with the intention of kicking Celtic off the park. Done the job and the ref done fck all. He’s one of them ffs. In the game at Celtic Park he was trying his best to find a reason to disallow the first goal.

  • Frankie says:

Joe I thought a referee was to control the game and be honest to both sides in decisions this never happened from brother Boaby on Sunday one way traffic to sevco.

Editor: As Conroy says, referees have tactics, we know Madden’s tactics, the real issue is the silent support he gets from Bankier and Nicholson. The middle man in here is Peter Lawwell who promotes Madden as a great guy.

  • Stephen says:

The Celtic board should hold their head in shame.
The SFA and Old Firm FC have some kind of hold over us.
Whos The 5th member of the 5 way secret agreement cause you can’t have oldco and newco.
Loving the blue £ will be their downfall.

  • Alan says:

It all comes down to Brother Madden what can you say …… He is a cheat and a disgrace to Scottish Football.

  • Alan says:

Brother bobby Madden is a disgrace to Scottish Football ,would not have mattered if Roofe had broken Madieda leg as he was clean through probably booked The wee man for diving Rangers basically kicked Celtic off the park and Brother Bobby done hee haw about it Lundstrum should have been sent off for 3 or 4 bad tackles.

  • Jimmy says:

Or maybe the game is rigged and celtic are in on it for the scottish game as”the product”

Editor: Difficult to suggest anything else #sharingiscaring #sydneysupercup

  • Edward Murison says:
