Ange Postecoglou’s claim that Danny Friel was due an apology has been contradicted by a claim from Ibrox that Stewart Robertson contacted the Celtic physio to apologise.

Neither club has made any official statement about the half-time incident during the Glasgow derby that saw Friel needing stitches to a head wound after being hit by a bottle.

Tonight a report in The Sun using the House Name of John Shields gives details of the claim from Ibrox. Unlike STV, Go Radio and The Herald/Glasgow Times group, The Sun hasn’t paid up to have pre and post-match media access at Ibrox.

At 18.42 tonight The Sun reported:

SunSport understands Ibrox chiefs were perplexed by the Parkhead boss’ comments on Friday ahead of today’s clash with St Johnstone.

A member of the Hoops physiotherapy team was allegedly struck by a bottle during last Sunday’s 2-1 Old Firm win at Ibrox.

He required stitches after the flashpoint which has seen a 32-year-old man arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

Postecoglou said he had not had an apology from anyone from their rivals before adding ‘but they don’t owe me an apology – they owe [him] the apology because he is the victim in this’.

Those comments have upset their rivals, as we can reveal the Celtic staff member was contacted directly by Rangers chief executive Stewart Robertson on Monday who apologised on behalf of the club.

SunSport also understands that Celtic were offered the use of the Ibrox medical room at half-time whilst Gers medical staff offered to attend to the Hoops’ physio.

Gers bosses believe they have also done all they can, along with Police Scotland, to investigate the incident with the club also set to ban ANY supporter found to be involved in the incident.

Should Celtic request a full public review of security at Ibrox from Sunday?

Yes, we need to know the levels of security including CCTV imaging

Postecoglou spoke out about Friel being owed an apology when he met with newspaper reports on Friday.

As well as the incident involving the Celtic physio there seems to be no explanation over how broken glass lay in the penalty box until it was spotted by Joe Hart, when he drew it to the attention of the match officials it resulted in a five minute delay to the second half kicking-off.

Aww, the poor wee darling – are his feelings hurt – shame he wasnt man enough to make a public apology, then his sensitivities wouldnt have been so wounded…

went back to watch the start of the second half from ayebrokes the other day. The view is from behind the rangers goal so I couldn’t see when the bottle was thrown or where from. What I did see was two groundsmen walking across Joe Hart’s goal, one in the 6 yard line the other aroud the 18 yard line apparently inspecting the goal area. The shards of glass were found just outside the 6 yard line. Make of that what you will

    Why would anybody believe Robertson?
In any case, Ange said that he wasn’t the one who needed an apology, he said Mr Freil was owed an apology, not that he didn’t receive one. The apology should also have been made public.

Also, the so called article at the Sun used the word “allegedly” in relation to the injury. There was nothing alleged about it. It happened. Nobody in their right mind could believe anything from the Sun. These people insinuate rather than tell the truth. We all know that. They know we all know that. Scotland’s shame indeed, them and the Sun.

  • Tam says:

I think CELTIC are playing a blinder here by not getting involved “for now”. It will highlight the lack of action taken against “the rangers” By the people who should.
    SMSM,SFA/SPFL, POLICE SCOTLAND, POLITICIANS.
If CELTIC get involved to early that will be the story NOT WHAT HAPPENED AT IBROX,
CELTIC after a period of time can ask the question: You have had plenty of time to take action and have not WHY, UEFA and FIFA should be approached and asked to sanction the SFA/SPFL for deliberately endangering players by NOT TAKING ACTION AGAINST “the rangers”

  • andrew mcdowall says:

Nothing will be done The investigation will be brushed under the carpet to protect the newco only uefa can step in to investigate this

  • Frankie says:
