The SFA’s strange fascination with assistant referee Frank Connor

For the second Sunday running Frank Connor will be an assistant referee at a Celtic SPFL Premiership match.

On Saturday there are five Premiership fixtures requiring 10 assistant referees, rather than select one of them for the Glasgow derby the SFA have decided to give Connor back-to-back Celtic matches.

There may be a perception on social media that Connor is a ‘Selik man’ but that theory was blown out the water at Hampden in April 2015.

Steven McLean and Alan Muir were the referee and additional assistant for Celtic’s Scottish Cup semi-final against Inverness Caley Thistle. On the North Stand that day Connor was an assistant referee, like his colleagues he missed the handball from Josh Meekings that kept a Leigh Griffiths header from going into the net.

Sunday’s other assistant referee is Graeme Stewart, last season he went ahead with picking up a match fee when he should have been self isolating after being a close associate of David Rome and Bobby Madden during a trip to Greece.

Stewart is better known for abruptly resigning as a Police Officer, in March 2017, The Sun reported:

A THUG cop who throttled a handcuffed suspect has quit the force — but will continue to run the line as a top-flight footie match official.

Disgraced PC Graeme Stewart, 31, resigned before he could be carpeted by bosses over the attack on Charles O’Donnell.

A police disciplinary probe was under way after he was fined £500 for assault.

Now SFA chiefs have ruled Stewart — who was on a Fifa elite roster — can keep his assistant referee job. A source said yesterday: “Stewart knew he faced the boot — he went before he was pushed.

“A moment of madness cost him his career. The SFA must have decided his crime conviction had nothing to do with his football role.”

Last night a Police Scotland spokesman said: “He is no longer a serving officer.”
