Linfield have won the Irish League title for the 56th time which apparently makes them the most successful club in the world.

A 2-0 win on Saturday at home to Coleraine clinched the title which carries similar prestige to the Irn-Bru Petroltank Challenge Cup.

League football in the six north-eastern counties effectively ended in 1948 when Belfast Celtic were forced to withdraw due to the lack of protection to their players following a match at Linfield.

A generation later Derry City almost went the same way but after a decade without football at the Brandywell they returned to play in the League of Ireland.

Title 56 apparently carries some significance but you are unlikely to find Real Madrid caring much about the celebrations in east Belfast.

As everyone with functioning brain cells knowns the Spanish giants with 13 European Cup/Champions League wins Real are the most successful club in the world even though they have only been Spanish champions 35 times.

Ibrox starlet Jake Hastie was part of the successful Linfield squad, with his Ibrox contract expiring at the end of this month the 24-year-old is expected to be seeking new opportunities.
