Ally McCoist is still bleating about his Champions League near miss (as a player).

Like most things Ibrox related the events of season 92/93 have been given something of a factual makeover.

Apparently Walter Smith’s side reached the semi-finals only to be cheated out of glory by Marseilles who then won the Big Cup only to be stripped of glory for the indiscretions of Bernard Tapie.

For the record there were no semi-finalists, after two qualifying rounds the last eight clubs were put into two groups of four with the winners playing off in the final. Marseilles beat AC Milan 1-0 in the final, a result that remains in the record books to this day, the only French winners.

Following the tears in Seville, McCoist told Four Four Two magazine:

We drew 2-2 with Marseille at Ibrox and 1-1 with them in France: If we’d scored another goal in either of those games, we would have been in the competition’s first-ever final.

Back then there were no quarter- or semi-finals, but two groups of four teams, with the winner of each qualifying for the final. Marseille finished top with nine points and we were second with eight, so one more goal in either of the games against them would’ve been enough.

It would have been Milan in the final. You’d better believe that we were good enough to win it – Marseille beat them. Of course, you remember the problems with Marseille and Bernard Tapie, their owner. We really felt cheated by the situation.

Three months after being good enough to beat AC Milan, including Frank Rijkaard, Marco van Basten, Paolo Maldini and Franco Baresi, Walter Smith’s All-Stars lost to Levski Sofia in the first round of the Champions League. After winning 3-2 at Ibrox they lost 2-1 in Bulgaria to go out on away goals.

Next week McCoist will review the 2011/12 Champions League campaign which ended in Malmo.

IF we had done this that and the next thing blah blah blah. Always an IF with this mob. IF Sparta hadn’t had 3 goals dis allowed this year you would never have reached Seville. Think about that one Ally.

What about EBT years when every club in Scotland’s top league was cheated out of trophies & cash. Still sticks in my throat oldco wasn’t stripped of “silverware” and tribute act didn’t pay every other clubs compensation.

  • Kd says:

Was the rangers not at the cheating themselves during those days! Not to mention the historic and ongoing refereeing mishaps, bias media and football authorities with no backbone to keep them in line with the other teams in Scotland. Don,t make me laugh sally.

  • Jack says:
