Bobby Madden could be followed by other referees quitting Scotland for the full-time circuit in England.

After being forced to step down from the lucrative international circuit Madden has decided that refereeing in League One and Two in England is a better option than shuttling between Scotland and Greece on match fees and expenses.

With each club in League One and League Two playing 46 matches a season Madden can expect two match fees a week with his ego convincing him that a 43-year-old can break through into the EPL.

Most leading Scottish referees have careers in the professions with football a part-time income topped off European appointments.

Madden was a ‘warehouse operative’ before taking up full-time refereeing, chasing every appointment and trying to become a personality through Open Goal and Instagram.

With Madden heading south other referees in a similar position might see it as a route to go down.

Andy Newport is a close friend of John Beaton, if just two more of the SFA’s FIFA listed referees decided that there was more money down south the Scottish game could be forced to look outwith Lanarkshire and Glasgow for referees.

Madden’s desperation for match fees saw him attempt to referee a Ross County v Celtic match despite knowing that colleague David Roome had tested positive after being together in Greece for a match.

It would be far better if we had more referees outwith the Lanarkshire and Glasgow region.

Will be interesting to see which football club he nominates as his “team ” as is a requirement for referee’s in England!!
    Carlisle United, anyone!!

Madhun is now going to have to declare which team he supports.

  • Paul Aurige says:

I think that once the lower division English outfits see Madden in action the SFA can rest easily as there won’t be much call for Scottish referees down there.

  • Jack says:

Var done it if he can’t help his club he’ll drop down the Mason ranks serious he just can’t be fair when he referees his team and it affects decision when refereeing Celtic_fc_1888 games can only be good for our game

  • Pan says:

Get the rest tae fooooook and go for people outside the Lanarkshire cabal.
