FC Arouca of Portugal have announced the signing of Ismaila Soro on a season long loan from Celtic.

The midfielder was left out of the Celtic squad that is in Austria for three matches as Ange Postecoglou prepares for the new season with a vastly different squad to the one that he inherited last season.

Soro started last season’s SPFL Premiership opener away to Hearts but his remaining seven SPFL appearances were coming off the bench with his final sighting in a Celtic shirt coming in the closing minutes of the February Glasgow derby.

Late on Saturday night Arouca tweeted:

Ismaila Soro, defensive midfielder and Ivorian international, is the latest addition to FC Arouca! The midfielder arrives in Portugal after winning the Scottish championship.

Last month Vasilis Barkas joined Utrecht on a similar basis.

Arouca finished last season fourth bottom of the league, winning 31 points from 34 matches, three points above relegation and two above a play-off place.

Soro is under contract with Celtic until May 2024. Signed under the Peter Lawwell/Neil Lennon axis in January the hoops paid Israeli side Bnei Yehuda a fee of around £2m for the Ivorian.
