Michael Nicholson has been elected onto the board of the SPFL as one of three reps from the Premiership.

What actual power the SPFL board actually has is up for debate with one major club allowed to complete last season ignoring the sponsorship deal that 41 other clubs complied with.

The Celtic CEO is joined on the board by Hibs owner Ron Gordon and James McDonald of Ross County.

Gordon’s appointment is probably of most interest, Hibs alongwith Hearts, Dundee, Aberdeen and Dundee United have commissioned Deloitte to report on all manner of issues relating to the SPFL with an emphasis on sponsorship and broadcasting.

Last season Sky Sports didn’t have up their full allocation of live matches while the stand-off between cinch and Ibrox generated more attention than the actual deal which was renegotiated with Premiership clubs handing over additional branding to the car sales firm.

The SPFL website reported: “Elected to serve on the 2022/23 SPFL Board, alongside SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster, chairman Murdoch MacLennan and independent non-executive director Karyn McCluskey, were:

  • cinch Premiership: Michael Nicholson (Celtic), Ron Gordon (Hibernian), James MacDonald (Ross County)
  • cinch Championship: Les Gray (Hamilton Academical), Graeme Mathie (Ayr United)
  • cinch League 1 and League 2: Alastair Donald (Forfar Athletic), Alternate director – Paul Hetherington (Airdrieonians)

Elections are held every year to serve on the SPFL Board of Directors.
