Alfredo Morelos will be back in action ‘in the coming weeks’ according to Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The SPFL Premiership season starts in 10 days away to Livingston followed quickly by Champions League qualifiers against Royal Union of Belgium in successive midweeks.

With Kemar Roofe even further behind Morelos it leaves van Bronckhorst with just Antonio ‘Blanco’ Covak as a striker.

The PAOK ace was on form for Malmo a year ago but has failed to score in three appearances for the SPFL runners-up who last night added former Preston star Ben Davies to his defence which already includes Connor Goldson, John Souttar, Filip Helander, Nicky Katic, Leon King and Jack Simpson.

Asked about the availability of strikers, van Bronckhorst told the Glasgow Times:

Antonio Colak is the only natural striker we have. Hopefully we get Alfredo Morelos back in the coming weeks. He will be back quicker than Kemar Roofe. But hopefully we can get Alfredo and Kemar back in the coming weeks.

The server for the Times/Herald was down overnight.

Morelos hasn’t played since March 20, picking up an injury soon afterwards on international duty then requiring thigh surgery. After some extensive summer parting he has been posting video clips of his gym work on Instagram.

Constant injuries last season restricted Roofe to starting just nine SPFL Premiership matches.

Getting in a full pre-season of fitness and endurance work is vital to all players, missing out can often lead to a season regularly interrupted by injury.

Morelos is under contract until May 2023 with Derby County keen to bring Roofe on loan to League One to head up their promotion bid.

NOTE: Calvin Bassey’s transfer to Ajax is still imminent.
