Kris Boyd has warned Giovanni van Bronckhorst not to bank on the backing of James Tavernier.

After losing their fifth successive Champions League tie, on Wednesday away to Napoli, the club captain was wheeled out to state that their under-fire boss had the backing of the players in the dressing room.

Turning in a performance or picking up a point or three would be of more use to van Bronckhorst than the mutterings of his underwhelming captain.

Tav’s backing wasn’t enough to save Mark Warburton or Pedro Caixinha while Graeme Murty was left sobbing and broken after Tav’s mates caved in to a 5-0 defeat to present Celtic with the 2018 SPFL title.

Warning van Bronckhorst about his employment prospects, Boyd told The Sun:

One more slip could spell the end for the Gers boss. He’s already under massive pressure after a run of six defeats in 12 games.

Captain James Tavernier insists the players are still right behind him. But some of those players have already seen two or three other managers off the premises.

So if I was Van Bronckhorst, I’d be more interested in their actions than their words. They need to do today what they couldn’t do against Livingston last week. Win.

Aberdeen arrive at Ibrox in third place in the Premiership table on the back of wins over Hearts and Dundee United.
