Graeme Souness was left dismayed by the Inferiority Complex that he discovered at Ibrox in midweek.

Years spent down south getting fed rose-tinted updates by Jim White and Ally McCoist led the former Scotland midfielder into believing that the good old days were back at Ibrox.

Fuelled by the in-built Superiority Complex the loyal bears believe that they are a force in world football rather than a 10-year-old Tribute Act that has won less honours than St Johnstone during that period.

Reaching the Champions League was billed as being ‘back where we belong’ but a goal difference of 1-16 has delivered a brutal reality check with a trip to group leaders Napoli drawing ever closer.

Picking up on Souness’ comments in the Daily Mail, Glasgow Times reports:

I was back up at Ibrox as a guest of my old club Rangers on Wednesday night. The 7-1 win made it a wonderful occasion for Liverpool but I was disappointed that Rangers looked like a side with an inferiority complex.

I accept that the way the Premier League has evolved creates a financial gulf. Liverpool’s most expensive player was Darwin Nunez, who cost £68million.

Rangers’ most expensive player was Ryan Kent, who cost £6.5m but Rangers were either going to get rolled over by Liverpool or get in their faces and they never set about them. They never really believed in what they were doing.

The old Rangers could always count on friendly transfer deals to England with Souness negotiating deals with his old mate Murray for Tugay, Barry Ferguson and Jean-Alain Boumsong.

With Souness working on transfer deals, an unlimited overdraft agreed by Gavin Masterton and HMRC scrutinising every contract it looks like fans of the Tribute Act could be in for a long period of grim reality.
