Douglas Park chaired Severance Sunday talks with The Sun reporting that the vast majority of the Ibrox board have lost faith in Giovanni van Bronckhorst as manager.

Earning a place in the record books as the worst ever team to play in the Champions League was just about tolerated but falling nine points behind Celtic after dismal performances away to St Johnstone and St Mirren has accelerated the process of binning the Dutchman.

Unfortunately that will cost the club £4m with no sign that van Bronckhorst will walk away from a contract that runs until May 2025.

Having taken the club to the final of the Europa League and group stages of the Champions League the former Arsenal midfielder has delivered in terms of revenue but paying out a sum similar to the one picked up from Aston Villa for Steven Gerrard will be a painful move for the Ibrox side.

Writing in The Sun, former Rangers News reporter Colin Duncan explains:

RANGERS boss Gio van Bronckhorst is clinging to his job after club chiefs held crisis talks.

The Ibrox hierarchy spent the weekend locked in discussions about the beleaguered Dutch manager.

Van Bronckhorst claimed he had the backing of the Light Blues board in the wake of Saturday’s 1-1 draw with St Mirren.

However, SunSport understands the vast majority of them have now lost faith in the 47-year-old.

Van Bronckhorst, who is now back in Holland for a break, was given a stay of execution following the home draw with Livingston last month.

The Gers board met in the wake of that shocker and decided to let him continue in the hope results and performances would improve.

However, since then Gers have been hammered by Ajax and Napoli in the Champions League and lost to St Johnstone in Perth before Saturday’s draw in Paisley.

That damaging result has left Gers nine points behind leaders Celtic and was the final straw for most of the board.

And now, just six months after leading them to the Europa League final, Van Bronckhorst’s time at the helm appears to be up.

Failing to win 14 of his 27 matches in charge this season has brought the situation to a head.

But Rangers will not be able to get rid of their gaffer and his backroom staff cheaply.

Chairman Douglas Park will have to stump up £4million on a compensation package for GVB and his coaching team.

Compensation would also have to be found to get Davie Martindale or Robbie Neilson out of their current contracts.
