Callum McGregor is closing in on a return to action as he recovers from the knee injury he suffered away to RB Leipzig on October 5.

No surgery was required on his knee but the captain had to take a back seat through half of the Champions League campaign and a hectic run of domestic fixtures.

A greater burden was placed on Matt O’Riley and Reo Hatate but they responded in style with vital contributions also coming from Aaron Mooy and David Turnbull.

McGregor has been in the dug-out on matchdays watching his side intently and is now ready to take the final steps on his recovery as Ange Postecoglou’s side enjoy a week in Australia with two matches coming up against Sydney FC and Everton.

Hopefully I’ll be joining in bits of the session this week will be progressing the rehab so it will be an important five or six days for me as well. I’m looking forward to being on the grass with the boys.

Celtic will travel to Portugal next month for a week of training, if all goes to plan McGregor could get some game time in the match against Stade Rennes.

When the SPFL resumes Celtic have trips to Pittodrie, Easter Road and Ibrox in the first fortnight, having McGregor on the pitch will be a big boost to the manager and his squad.
