Two nights before Christmas a sick song about Tommy Burns was on repeat from the away fans at Ross County.
Sky Sports broadcast the full match without a single apology or reference to the song.
It wasn’t a one off, it wasn’t from a handful of young fans, it wasn’t from ‘a tiny minority of the away fans’ either.
While the chant is sick it is entirely predictable from a support that twice had parts of Ibrox closed in 2019 due to the racism of their fans.
Normally when a stray swear word is picked up by the microphones an apology is quickly broadcast along the lines of ‘We’d like to apologise if anyone heard some offensive language’. Last night there wasn’t a word from anyone on Sky Sports.
Ian Crocker heard it through his commentary and said nothing.
Burns’ former Celtic team-mate Andy Walker heard it and said nothing.
In the studio at the stadium Kris Boyd and James McFadden, who were coached by Burns as Scotland players said nothing.
As they gloss over everything in the build up to next week’s Hate Festival at Ibrox it seems that Sky Sports are happy to broadcast without comment the sick festive tunes of one set of supporters.
The last time Celtic went to Ibrox a physio had a glass bottle smashed on his head while glass ‘mysteriously’ appeared in Joe Hart’s goalmouth during the half time break.
Celtic CEO Michael Nicholson opted to say nothing about either incident, next week he’ll be joined by ‘new’ chairman Peter Lawwell to take part in the Loving Cup ceremony.
