Steve Conroy is baffled over Willie Collum’s refusal to get John Beaton to review the Connor Goldson handball at Ibrox.

Trailing 2-1, Celtic were pushing for an equaliser when Carl Starfelt took a swipe at goal. Goldson raised both hands, there was contact with the ball and the sting taken out of the shot from the Celtic defender.

Referee Beaton didn’t award a penalty but held up play as he consulted with Collum on VAR duty with the benefit of all the Sky Sports cameras at Ibrox. After a short pause the game continued without a penalty being awarded.

Conroy refereed one Glasgow derby in season 2009/10, after mysteriously disallowing a Celtic goal and refusing to send off Kyle Lafferty for a brutal foul on Andreas Hinkel his career went into free fall.

Picking up on Conroy’s thoughts on a podcast, The Sun reports the former referee saying:

The VAR team didn’t make the right call with the Connor Goldson handball shout – to me, it looked like a handball.

Now that Scottish football actually has VAR, I have no idea why that incident wasn’t put to review. Unless there’s a view of it that we viewers at home didn’t see, I’m not sure why John Beaton wasn’t advised to have a look at the monitor.

It shouldn’t be decided by those in charge of VAR if it’s a penalty or not, that should be left to John so he can make up his own mind. I don’t blame John, he should’ve been given the opportunity to look at it again.

Should Celtic demand an explanation on Ibrox penalty decisions?

Yes, time for accountability and transparency

No, just teething problems, take it on the chin

Since VAR was introduced in October the SFA haven’t explained a single decision other than admitting to a camera malfunction during Celtic’s 2-1 win away to Motherwell in November.

It would be a nailed on spot kick if it had have been a Celtic player. No doubt about it.

  • John Copeland says:

Make it compulsory for all officials to give a 20 minute interview with the Press and other outlets ,to be questioned about the match they have just overseen and all of the contentious decisions made . That would clear up any controversy and make punters happier going home .The current situation where officials get a free rein of silence after every game ,makes you think that the Governing bodies are trying to hide something …. Ken wot a meen ,big Maxy …

  • Voice of Reason says:

  • Eric Dillon says:

Why are these cheating refs allowed to get away with disallowing Celtic penalties. He didn’t check Var but gave ‘Rangers’ one which television commentary admitted it was a wrong decision. If its their attempt to give ‘Rangers’ the league it backfired and Celtic are still 9 points ahead

  • Dando says:

Canny blame Beaton…. 100% diddy WC fault.

Club should refuse to pay another penny to the cost of Var in any match dud officials cant be trusted on the field or in the Studio its a Sevco penalty happens in our box, var is highlighting how there either bias or incompatent or both HH,lets here from the Sfa that its working H H

  • Anthony McGonigale says:

We have said it all before but until we have foreign referees and VAR officials ,at the very least to officiate the Glasgow derby, Celtic will never get a fair crack of the whip from the corrupt / substandard Scottish referees. Celtic should raise a complaint to UEFA as they certainly have enough video evidence to support their complaint . As the dust settles the Hoops are still 9 points clear and we’ll on their way to another title.

  • George Kerr says:

Collum is a bigot and a smart erse. Know all – knows nothing. He’s running his own game and that is ILLEGAL. Get these buns before a TV camera to explain what their decisions.
Make them accountable, make them realise they can’t hide.
Hang your head in shame Collum, you are a total disgrace. A liar and a proven cheat.

  • Thomas Daly says:

Said it b4 the sfa should train and appoint a brand new team for var that have no religious grievance against ANY OTHER FOOTBALL CLUB APART FROM 1open cheque book for the brothers nothing to see here lads, did u see it,? neither did I let’s move on.

  • Kevin Dunne says:

Nothing will change as most officials in Scotland are either masonic lodge members or affiliates, scared of the black ball vote. Colloum should be demoted to lower league football and have to prove his worth to referee top flight foitball

  • Ryan Derry says:

Steve Conroy didn’t get the memo Dougal got. Apparently there wasn’t enough for var to intervene. This is why this league is a fkn joke
