Kris Boyd’s surprise Ibrox penalty call

Kris Boyd is far from convinced that a penalty should have been awarded against Celtic in the Glasgow derby.

Two minutes into the second half Ryan Kent had cancelled out Daizen Maeda’s opening goal, soon afterwards the home side were again attacking down their right flank.

Carl Starfelt foolishly dived in, there was no need or benefit from it but he wasn’t close to contact with Fashion Sakala.

The Ibrox forward pushed his foot into his grounded opponent, John Beaton was close by and pointed to the penalty spot.

Watching Boyd on Sky Sports live coverage of the match, the Daily Record reports the former Kilmarnock striker saying:

I’m still not sure whether it’s a penalty or not. I think Sakala stands on Starfelt. I know he goes to ground and the rules are rules, but forget it, it’s given.

Should Celtic demand an explanation on Ibrox penalty decisions?

No, just teething problems, take it on the chin

Willie Collum could have over-ruled the decision, he could have suggested that Beaton looks at the pitchside monitor but the VAR opted to take no action.

Midway through the second half Celtic had what appeared to be strong claims for a penalty when Connor Goldson raised his arms to block a shot from Starfelt, this time neither official felt that it was a penalty.

Holy crap! I have heard it all now. Kris ” Monster Munch” Boyd thought it wasn’t a spot kick. I must be in a parallel universe.

  • John S says:

Didn’t think it was a penalty either. It is the attacker’s foot that makes contact with the defender.

I think maybe , he genuinely just doesn’t know!

Top level professional sport in Scotland being manipulated in broad daylight in front of millions and its just basically accepted.
If its not manipulation its utter ineptitude.
Either way its a scandal its allowed to continue.
The only people today who thought that wasn’t a pen to Celtic were those trained and paid to say it was.

No comment on the game on BBC Teletext Scotland Sports Headlines. Uncertainty, embarrassment or just no comment? What do we pay these people for?

  • KC67 says:

VAR or no VAR, the blatant cheating will continue with the blessing of the Celtic board. The *ld *irm is worth £5m a year to Celtic, right Peter?

Nothing will change until this useless and toothless board are ousted.
