Nick Walsh again- SFA turn to their favoured referee to take charge of Viaplay Cup Final

Nick Walsh will referee next Sunday’s Viaplay Cup Final at Hampden.

The Bearsden based PE teacher was in charge of the opening Glasgow derby of the season with Celtic winning 4-0 in the SPFL.

John Beaton handled the January meeting between the two clubs but rather than put Willie Collum or Kevin Clancy in charge of the final- two referees that have taken charge of the fixture in recent season the SFA have turned to Walsh.

There seems to be a heavy dependency on Walsh for fixtures involving both of the Glasgow sides.

After 25 rounds of SPFL matches he has taken charge of Celtic five times with the same number of fixtures involving the Ibrox club. All but one of those fixtures has been in Glasgow, additionally Walsh was in charge when Micky Beale’s side beat Aberdeen in the semi-final of the Viaplay Cup.

Walsh was the VAR official at Ibrox last month when Nicky Clark was sent off with the SFA upholding St Johnstone’s appeal against that decision.

Clancy gets the consolation prize of being the fourth official with Beaton on VAR duties.

Asked about Walsh and Bobby Madden at the 2021 Celtic AGM Ian Bankier said that the club had deep concerns about refereeing issues.
