With the exception of Andy Halliday escaping punishment for a foul on Alistair Johnston just inside the penalty box yesterday’s Scottish Cup tie at Tynecastle was almost free of controversy.

Celtic were in front from the second minute, doubled that just before half time which seemed to kill off the fight inside the home players.

The match officials almost escaped scrutiny but there was one incredible mistake during the first half when one of the assistants seemed as disorientated as the Hearts defenders at the movement of their opponents.

Quite clearly there are two Celtic players in clear offside positions, just as clearly Jota, who moved onto the ball has three Hearts players between him and the goal-line as well as Zander Clark.

With VAR available assistants don’t raise their flag for offside until the move breaks down, in this case not only was Jota clearly onside but the flag wrongly went up to stop play with Celtic only 1-0 ahead.

David McGeachie and Dougie Potter were the assistant referees on duty at Tynecastle.
