John Souttar has revealed that he played for 67 minutes against Livingston at the start of the season with a stress fracture of his ankle.

The 25-year-old moved to Ibrox as a free agent during the summer and was anxious to take advantage of an injury to Filip Helander to make a good impression.

Playing on an artificial pitch with any sort of knock is obviously a risk but for a player that had snapped his achilles three times carrying 16 stone around on the opening day of the season seems to be a step too far.

Picking up on yesterday’s media conference the Daily Record reported Souttar saying:

I felt the pain before the Livi game and during it then we got it scanned after and it was the stress fracture in the ankle but it was what it was. I had to get back, keep myself in shape and come back the best possible way I can.

Last Saturday Souttar started his second match of the season, providing the assist for Jota to score Celtic’s decisive third goal.

With Connor Goldson still injured it looks like the former Hearts defender will start today’s match against St Mirren at Ibrox.
