Ally McCoist couldn’t bring himself to admit that Kyogo Furuhashi is a better player than Alfredo Morelos.

The former Scotland striker charms English audiences with his banter and enthusiasm as a pundit but when it comes to his home patch he just can’t admit the truth.

Kyogo is the top scorer in the SPFL Premiership with 23 goals this season with Morelos trailing in eighth place with just 11 goals, less than team-mates James Tavernier and Antonio Colak.

Hearts, Motherwell and Aberdeen all have players with more SPFL goals than the Colombian but put on the spot by Chris Sutton, McCoist just couldn’t admit the glaringly obvious.

Listening to a podcast, the Daily Record reports:

Ally McCoist: “Celtic have somebody right now who is on fire. The wee fella’s on fire. He plays on the shoulder, he’s only interested in finishing. He’s the same as Haaland in the respect that he doesn’t really want to get involved in the game. Completely different player, I get that, but they’ll get involved, they’ll link up a little bit but he just wants to position himself for a finish, because that’s his strength and he’s very, very good at it. So Rangers’ two centre-backs are key. Goldson has to play, that’s massive.”

Chris Sutton: “Would you rather have Kyogo than Morelos as your centre-forward?”

McCoist: “Right now? Right now? Kyogo’s the one on form but it’s an impossible question to answer because Kyogo does not play for Rangers. He’s very good, he’s very good, he really is.”

Sutton: “Excellent?”

McCoist: He’s the best finisher at this moment in time in the country.

Sutton: “So you’d rather have him than Morelos?”

McCoist: “I’m paying him all sorts of compliments here. He’s the best finisher at this moment in time in the country.

Sutton: “This is why this is a great rivalry because he’ll never say it.”

McCoist: “Of course I can’t say it!”

This season Kyogo has scored five times in the Glasgow Derby, since moving from HJK Helsinki in 2017 Morelos has scored three goals against Celtic.

On Sunday the two strikers are expected to be in opposition at Hampden in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup.

Let’s not be so dismissive of Mororless, he can always be our water boy, certainly not a ballboy. Would you trust him to get the ball back for the shy in jig time? Actually, if he was waterboy, our Bhoys would die of thirst.
