When the Ibrox Tribute Act started charging £25,000 a season for media access STV were one of the few mainstream outlets to pay up, joining Sky Sports and a few extreme fan-sites drooling over the thoughts of Steven Gerrard and a disinterested player once or twice a week.

The Glasgow based publisher had previous for deals with Ibrox clubs, in December 2011 The Guardian reported:

Rangers’ chief operations officer, Ali Russell, said: “We are delighted to be working with STV to develop and maximise joint online brand and commercial opportunities that benefit both organisations.”

And the story also quotes STV’s director of broadcast services, Bobby Hain, as saying: “We are delighted to be working with Rangers in the online area and believe that this arrangement will be hugely beneficial to both parties…

“We aim to work with a wide range of football and sporting organisations, creating opportunities for them to promote their brand in innovative ways.”

That spirit seems to be living on with the Press Release of a deal for dog scarves passing for news on the STV website although it never made Scotland Today with big Raman showing off his colours.

STV loyally report:

The retro-styled canine shirt, which comes in six sizes, is based on iconic Ibrox shirts of the past.

Natalie Nairn, Rangers head of retail and events, said: “We’re well aware of the unwavering dedication of Rangers supporters as well as their deep affection for their cherished pets.

Our goal was to create a product that would help make our four-legged fans feel like an integral part of the Rangers community.

We eagerly anticipate seeing pets all over the country and beyond proudly wearing these scarves.”

No detail is given over how many My Gers points are given for each scarf purchase.

There has to come a point when our capacity for incredulity is matched by their lack of self-awareness – but it hasn’t been reached yet.
