Ronan Ferns is the latest young talent quitting the Celtic Academy to move to England.

Ben Doak is the highest profile departure in recent years with Jurgen Klopp delighted to get the winger to Anfield where he made a couple of substitute appearances last season.

Rory Mahady joined Leeds United last season while Josh Adam went to Manchester City, further afield Liam Morrison and Barry Hepburn were signed by Bayern Munich.

At 9.26 in their Live Transfer Blog the Daily Record reported:

Brighton have agreed a £250,000 deal to sign Celtic youngster Ronan Ferns. The Scotland youth defender will join the Premier League outfit this summer.

Ferns, who can also play midfield, had come through the Celtic youth ranks but hadn’t signed professional forms.

It meant that the Seagulls were able to make their move for the 16-year-old. It was a blow for the Hoops who were keen to keep Ferns.

Celtic would have been entitled to training compensation but have now cut a deal that will also see them get further add-ons.

Ferns will join Brighton’s under-23 and development squad in the first instance.

Evan Ferguson is the best current example of players coming through the ranks at Brighton, the 18-year-old from Bohemians in 2020, last season he started 18 EPL matches and returned an impressive tally of six goals.

Next season at Celtic Ferns would be looking at playing in the Lowland League although there is no confirmation over whether Celtic B will take part for a third season.
