Liam Shaw has joined Wigan Athletic on a season long loan.

The midfielder was left out of the Celtic squad for the pre-season training camp in Portugal but has secured a move from a relegated League One club to join one of the favourites for promotion, managed by Shaun Maloney.

Shaw was the last Celtic signing made by Neil Lennon who resigned a couple of weeks after the pre-contract deal was made with the Sheffield Wednesday midfielder.

After starting the Europa League dead rubber against Real Betis and making a 10 minute substitute appearance at St Mirren, Shaw went out on loan to Motherwell in January 2022 before spending last season at Morecambe.

I’m really happy to be here. I just can’t wait to get started. I’m looking forward to meeting everyone, getting to know the boys, and getting to business.

It’s a massive Club, and when I spoke to the Manager, I really bought into his vision and I can’t wait to get started!

It will suit my game. The manager wants to play football, and be aggressive, which is what I want to do. I feel like it’s a really good fit.

With two years left on his contract it is unlikely that any club will match Shaw’s wages and pay a transfer fee, getting out on loan to Wigan two weeks before League One begins should give him a good platform to get his career on track.
