Celtic have named Liam Bonetig as the trialist defender that played against Sligo Rovers last night.

In the pre-match team list published on Twitter the name Trialist was listed alongside Magnus MacKenzie but the match report on the club website named Bonetig.

The 17-year-old is believed to be training with the B squad after catching the eye during a UK tour from the Australian u-19 squad in January.

During the summer Dylan Corr and Ewan Otoo moved on to Raith Rovers and Dunfermline which leaves a couple of places in central defence for the B team who will be playing in the Lowland League and UEFA Youth League.

Alongside his older brother Alex, Liam plays for Western Sydney Wanderers who play in the division below the A-League.

With Marco Tilio signing last week from Melbourne City it is clear that Celtic are strongly scouting in Australia, taking advantage of the increased profile the club has following two seasons with Ange Postecoglou in charge.

Can someone explain to me why we haven’t spent a bean from all this so called money we apparently have in the bank,so called money that would blow sevco out the water on spending terms.
Still no big names signed no signs of breaking transfer fee records while taking unknown players onloan.
Meanwhile sevco get on their merry way bringing in player after player after player.

With Lawwell back in the building I wouldn’t be surprised if that money is earmarked as performance bonuses for the board…

  • William Aitkenhead says:

The Australian trialist already played v Fraserburgh and was clearly named.

As far as not spending a bean, we have renewed contracts with several players McGregor, Kyogo, Maeda…most certainly for the last 2 on better terms.

The quality of players we are after will have more clubs chasing them, so not so readily available as some FREEBIES / Has beens or never was’ers being snapped up by the new club over Govan way.

We will have to work hard and pay top dollar to attract players awau from the EPL / La Liga / Bundesliga even Saudi now. But well worth the wait I am sure

Still doesn’t explain the reason for no transfer action or activity,as for players signing extensions to contracts that’s nothing to do with transfers.
At this moment in time it looks like sevco are stealing a march on us with transfer activities.

FFS, give it a rest Scud. The money spent renewing contracts is sound spending when you look at who it’s on. The new huns are bringing in waifs an’ strays and you’ll see that in good time. Celtic, under Brendan and no DoF (Lawwell) to piss him off will bring in the best we can when we can and the window is open for over 6 weeks. Calm down!
You’re falling for all the hun hype. They’re ALWAYS a mile ahead of us according to the SMSM, that is until competitive fitba returns. Just wait and see!
