Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Stephen Welsh is looking at three to four months out of action and will require surgery on his ankle.

The defender signed a new contract on Friday morning them suffered an ankle injury during training.

On Saturday morning the Daily Record reported that Welsh would be out for a minimum of two months but yesterday that timeline was extended.

Listening in to Rodgers speaking to Radio Scotland in his pre-match interview, The Celtic Way reports the hoops boss saying:

It’s just really unfortunate for Stephen. Right at the end of training, he landed awkwardly and he ruptured the ligaments in his ankle which will mean he needs an operation.

That’ll put him out for around three to four months, which is a real shame for him because he played really well when he came on against Aberdeen and he would’ve started today (Sunday).

That timeline would see him scheduled to return in December, with the conditions at that time of year a return after the January break might be more realistic.

With Cameron Carter-Vickers suffering a hamstring injury away to Aberdeen the previous week it means that Rodgers is down to his two new signings plus Liam Scales as options in central defence.

No timeline has been offered for Carter-Vickers returning to action, with the clock ticking towards Ibrox on September 3 Rodgers will be hoping that his most experienced defender is available for the first Derby match of the season.

Disappointing news, and leaves us now with big problems with trying to fill our quota of homegrown players for CL.
When you look at how a CL squad is made up with usually 2 players for each position, a 3rd keeper, and usually 2 Scottish players as potential extra cover.
Now it’s a hindrance to ourselves, but the rules are the rules.
We only had 7 Scottish players been involved within the 1st team squad before the injury to Welsh, now down to 6.
Where are the extra 2 needed going to come from, and in what positions now?
Add in anymore injuries and suddenly this CL squad is potentially looking very stretched and the draw not even been made yet.
Last season we could still field a fairly decent and strong enough team for the 6 games, even if we couldn’t ever field our strongest 11, and lacking reinforcements in subs,.for the quality required at that level.
This season we are a long way short of the required standard, which is infuriating when most like myself were actually expecting strengthening for a CL squad, which isn’t happening at present and totally unacceptable for our club

The way thins are I’d be delighted with a point in The Glasgow Derby and a point in The Group Stages of The Champions League…

How could it have come to this after the highs of last season…

Ah well – it’s never boring or dull being a Celtic supporter for sure !

Speed recovery to Stephen Walsh – And the rest of the walking / hobbling wounded –
