Alistair Johnston has been pictured back in training at Lennoxtown.

The defender has been an absentee from training since the start of July with just some vague updates about getting the defender back on the grass.

At the end of April Johnston suffered a leg injury in the Scottish Cup semi-final, returned for the final two matches of the domestic season then picked up another injury while on international duty at the end of June.

Tony Ralston also missed a chunk of pre-season but has started the opening SPFL fixtures but beyond him the next option appears to be an out of position Tomoki Iwata.

Brendan Rodgers should offer an injury update this afternoon in his media conference but an appearance at Kilmarnock on Sunday looks highly unlikely.

Given a full week of training Johnston could be a contender to play against St Johnston next Saturday which falls eight days ahead of the first Glasgow Derby of the season.

It will be good to see him back – Hope Ralston plays well until then to give Brendan a wanted headache who to select – It’ll probably be Alastair – but having decent backup breathing down his neck will always be a Win – Win situation for Celtic !
