Brendan Rodgers turned the tables on the media as he threw back a claim that he has been on death watch since returning to Celtic.

When the Irishman was first mentioned as a candidate to replace Ange Postecoglou there was a fairly hostile reaction on line.

The manner of his 2019 departure for Leicester City left a lot of emotional scars with little sympathy for Rodgers when he was sacked by Leicester at the start of April.

When the other candidates for the Celtic job turned out to be Enzo Marseca and Kjetil Knutsen of Bodo Glimt there was a noticeable change in attitude towards Rodgers.

He might not win many popularity contests but a huge number of Celtic fans recognised that the former Leicester boss was clearly the outstanding candidate to replace Postecoglou.

Rodgers won’t ever be as popular as Postecoglou at his peak but that doesn’t mean that the Irishman is a defeat away from being chased out of office.

I understand I have been placed on death watch by the media but whatever the result today I’m an experienced manager now and I’m staying calm.

But that’s where you are powerless as a coach. For me I understand what we have, I understand what we are missing.

So for me, until we get the level of player back that will make a difference in some of our games we have to keep working and developing and improving and I have absolutely no doubt that we will do that as the season grows.

But listen, it’s three wins and a draw and some of the games have been good, but we are still piecing together a team which will look a lot more like it by the end of the season.
