Two days before the Champions League tie against Atletico Madrid the Green Brigade is stepping up their support for Palestine.

The eyes of the media and almost certainly UEFA will be on Celtic Park where it is likely that thousands of Palestine flags will be viewed on prime time television across Europe and beyond.

Two weeks ago the Celtic board stated that the club isn’t a political organisation but politics will be to the fore at Wednesday’s match for many fans.

Last week word emerged that the Green Brigade were no longer being allocated tickets for away matches while Celtic conducted a review of recent incidents at away fixtures.

Despite that a large number of the 571 away fans at Tynecastle displayed the distinctive Palestine flag before yesterday’s 4-1 win over Hearts although they were kept off screen by Sky Sports.

With most of the ground expected to be showing the Palestine flag tomorrow it will be virtually impossible for TNT Sport not to show crowd scenes with many Scottish media outlets expected to push for heavy UEFA punishments.

In 2016 Celtic were fined by UEFA after thousands of fans displayed the Palestine flag at a match against Hapoel Be’er Sheva, fans responded with a fund raiser that paid the fine with over £100,000 donated to Palestine charities.

The very idea that Israel play in ( compete for ) a place in the Euros , or have teams in European competitions is political… double standards and hypocrisy at the fore here .

  • Amcq14 says:

Hope there is a good display of Palestinian flags. I also hope the GB refrain from displaying anything else

No pyros, no banners – just wave a legitimate, national flag of your choice, if you want.

What could be ‘controversial’ about that?

    • Clachnacuddin and the Hoops says:

Definitely no Butchers Aprons as that flag of oppression and blood doesn’t deserve to be in a place called Paradise…

While they won’t be in sight tomorrow night – Keep The Huns, The Hearts Huns and if we ever meet Airdrie, Keep The Airdrie Huns out too !

Joe, with respect to you as a top Journalist, please give no media coverage
to the renegade Green Brigade. They are selling their own merchandise…
they can pay their UEFA fines. They are in for a big shock at Parkhead.
They are not part of the Celtic FC family.

Editor: Sky Sports and BBC Scotland decided not to cover certain aspects of the game on Sunday which is one of many reasons why I will cover Green Brigade matters, and cover them independently.

  • padriac says:

Extremely pleased to hear that news Joe. Great work. I was wrong with my opinion.

Editor: There are many areas that the Mainstream won’t go near, not my job to tell others what to do but my curiosity is drawn to that rather than rehashing tired and boring interviews with bland former players.
