Kyogo Furuhashi made good use of the international break by scoring for Japan in their 2-0 home win over Tunisia in Kobe.

A year ago the Celtic striker was drifting out of Hajime Moriyasu’s World Cup plans but 2023 has so far been a vintage year for the former Vissel Kobe striker.

Starting with a late equaliser on January 2 he has dominated the Glasgow Derby, scored in two cup finals as well as in the Champions League to underline his top flight credentials.

The international scene has been something of a problem but yesterday’s goal looked very similar to many Celtic strikes as he played off the last line of defenders then slotted home when confronted one-to-one with the Tunisian goalkeeper.

Yesterday’s goal was his fifth in 25 international appearances but that has amounted to just 829 minutes meaning that on average he has played just over 33 minutes for each cap.

Q. Look back on your goal.

Kyogo: The ball rolled in good place for me. I’m glad I was able to calm down and score a goal.”

Q. From next month, Asian qualifiers for World Cup will start, but the goal mean a lot to you, right?

Kyogo:  Of course, I want to believe so. I think I have to develop, so want to do my best at Celtic.

Q. Many fans and supporters were cheering for you today, so give them your message.

Kyogo: Thank you so much for always supporting us. Our team still has to develop, and I’m going to continue to brush up myself, so I’d be happy if you could continue to support me in the future.
