Arsenal have shown Celtic the way by backing Mikel Arteta’s complaints about VAR.
The Gunners lost 1-0 at Newcastle yesterday with Tony Gordon’s goal surviving three VAR checks before it was allowed to stand.
Yesterday’s defeat was a six pointer, it could be the difference between Arsenal playing in the Champions League next season or watching Newcastle in that competition as they prepare for Thursday’s in the Europa League.
In the EPL there is some dialogue over refereeing issues while in Scotland anyone questioning the decision making is instantly branded paranoid.
After his side’s defeat Arteta said:
How the hell did this goal stand up? It’s incredible. I feel embarrassed. It’s an absolute disgrace that this was allowed. For many reasons it’s not a goal.
It’s so difficult to compete at this level. This is nowhere near the [refereeing] level to describe this as the best league in the world. I feel sick to be part of this.
I have to stand here and explain, we lost three points. There’s too much at stake. It’s embarrassing. It’s not in their hands, I have to praise the players how they play here.
It’s incredible how they competed against this team, it makes me sick. I feel sick to be part of this.
Backing their manager, at lunchtime today Arsenal announced:
Arsenal Football Club wholeheartedly supports Mikel Arteta’s post-match comments after yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors on Saturday evening.
We’d also like to acknowledge the huge effort and performance from our players and travelling supporters at St James’ Park.
The Premier League is the best league in the world with the best players, coaches and supporters, all of whom deserve better. PGMOL urgently needs to address the standard of officiating and focus on action which moves us all on from retrospective analysis, attempted explanations and apologies.
We support the ongoing efforts of Chief Refereeing Officer, Howard Webb and would welcome working together to achieve the world-class officiating standards our league demands.
Our board won’t stand up ever to the Lanarkshire referees as they probably are all mates in the same lodges.
I’m not sure that’s the case, at no point was VAR wrong with their decision in the Newcastle game. Arteta is simply a petty little man, the daring officials to chide him for never being in his technical area shows that
time to use a non partizan it specialist looking at the var calls.
Our board are self serving cowards.Still to officially address the Israeli coaches comments never mind VAR
