Three weeks after the event Tom English has let slip that he has been sitting on an EXCLUSIVE! story.

The chief sports writer of BBC Scotland has barely had a sniff at a decent story in his entire career other than the occasional text message sent from Tynecastle to keep him sweet.

On December 16 at Hampden, Aberdeen were chasing an equaliser in the closing moments of the League Cup Final when Jack Butland wiped out Duk as the forward tried to turn the ball from a low corner goalwards inside the six yard box.

If it had occurred at the other end of the park Don Robertson would have been pointing to the penalty spot quickly backed up by Andrew Dallas on VAR duty.

After some pushing and shoving a VAR check was carried out to see if any cards were required but it was only Internet Bampots on Twitter that were highlighting the overlooked penalty claim.

A few minutes later the final whistle blew to kick off wild scenes of celebration in the Sports Department of BBC Scotland. Unlike the recent Glasgow Derby there was virtually no media spotlight or follow up on the penalty that Aberdeen were denied.

With too much time on their hands on Sportsound it seems that English spoke out of turn with The Sun reporting the veteran rugger reporter saying:

By way of comparison, in the last seconds of the league cup final, Jack Butland slides in on Duk. To my eyes it looks like a penalty, in many people’s eyes it looks like a penalty.

I know Aberdeen were considering going public with the protests but didn’t, they showed some restraint.

They were furious because they thought it was a penalty and they thought the whole VAR decision making process was sub standard.

I believe they did go and speak to Crawford Allan quietly behind the scenes. They didn’t go out all guns blazing in the media about it so there is a way of doing things.

It seems that after discovering that Aberdeen had questioned the non-penalty English decided to keep quiet on an obvious news story.

Steve Conroy and Bobby Madden are usually available 24/7 to give their views on refereeing controversies but it seems that BBC Scotland prefer drooling profile’s over a Belgian manager that doesn’t speak because his stare is much more effective.
