A 2003 UEFA Cup runners-up medal given to Bobby Petta will go up for auction next month at McTear’s in Glasgow.

An estimated value of £2-4,000 has been placed on the item but the twist is that Petta wasn’t in the squad named by Martin O’Neill for the match.

Seven substitutes were listed for the match including Jamie Smith and Momo Sylla but Petta only played in five matches that season which included the Champions League qualifier against Basel with his only UEFA Cup appearance coming away to Suduva when many of the first team squad were left in Glasgow after the first leg had been won 7-0.

On April 11 the Petta medal and many other Celtic related items will go under the hammer, the catalogue description claims:

BOBBY PETA OF CELTIC F.C., UEFA CUP RUNNERS UP SILVER MEDAL
2002/03

the obverse inscribed UEFA UEFA CUP 2003, the reverse with motif of three footballers, in silver, in box

Note: One of the defining moments for Celtic in the modern age, this medal comes from the historic 2002/03 UEFA Cup run.

Not getting the players name spelled correctly is a minor issue but the medal opens up the question of who else were given medals from the 3-2 defeat to Porto.

John Hartson missed the final through injury but played a significant role in the run to the final with away goals against Celts Vigo and Liverpool.

Petta left Celtic in December 2004 but has returned to Glasgow, settling in the city and is often involved in Legends matches and hospitality at Celtic Park.

Seville – My goodness if ever there was a Love – Hate season to reminisce about in Celtic’s Glorious 136 year history then 2002/03 is surely that said season !!!

I wasn’t in Seville but I reckon that game turned on Balde being ordered off. We never dealt with that properly.
I’d still like to have been there though!

If only Dereli hadn’t scored in first half injury time we’d have won 2-1…

I’ve replayed that over and over and over again in ma mind –

But if ma auntie had balls, she’d be ma uncle, but she doesn’t so she isn’t and all that !

That season still hurts like hell for me despite the near European Glory !!!
