Barry Ferguson has doubled down on his threats to Callum McGregor, today in the Daily Record he urges Philippe Clement’s players to ensure that the Celtic skipper ‘ends with his face in the grass’.

Everyone knows that fouls are committed, that players take one for the team with a yellow card but a former player turned pundit urging foul play is another matter.

You can get in about them, close them down and not give them any space which sends out a certain message but putting the boot in to commit fouls is territory that is rarely touched.

Earlier in the week during a phone-in on Go Radio Ferguson first raised the issue, that was instinctive, live radio but sitting down with a Daily Record reporter or over the phone Ferguson has again laid out his plan to stop McGregor and Celtic.

I’ve already had some stick this week for saying Rangers need to attack this game from the start and to stop Callum McGregor from dominating the midfield at all costs.

I’m certainly not going to apologise for saying it. It’s part and parcel of the game. If I’m playing against my opposite number and he gets past me, I’m not going to stand back and say, ‘Aye, on you go mate – take it for a 30 yard run’.

If my midfield partner isn’t close enough to snuff him out, or my defence is too deep, then I’ll make sure my guy ends up with his face in the grass. That’s got nothing to do with ‘dark arts’ and everything to do with how to win football matches.

Just ask Neil Lennon. The two of us went into these matches on opposite sides but with the exact same mentality: ‘If I can’t dictate the game today then I’ll make damn sure he’s not going to do it either’.

That’s the job. It’s about taking responsibility. Sometimes it means you have to take a booking in this fixture but that’s what being a team player is all about.

If people want to criticise me for saying that then fine. But I’m also fairly sure Clement will have been hammering home the same message all week behind closed doors.

Since retiring from playing Ferguson has been in management at Clyde, Kelty Hearts and Alloa without any real success, since leaving Alloa in February 2022 he hasn’t been linked with a return to management.

Willie Collum will referee tomorrow’s match with Steven McLean on VAR.
