Martin O’Neill marked his second return to managing Celtic with another 4-0 win.
Back in the autumn Falkirk and Kilmarnock lost by that scoreline as the Irishman returned to the home dug-out.
In-between Celtic had suffered badly through an eight match run with Wilfried Nancy in charge. Just two wins were achieved, Celtic lost a cup final, a Europa League tie and 12 SPFL points.
Home defeats to their two closest rivals could prove costly when the campaign is completed. Defeat last Saturday in the Glasgow Derby was one too many for the Frenchman.
O’Neill’s return was announced on Monday night, he has yet to be given any new players but his impact was instant.
O’NEILL HAS CELTIC BEING CELTIC
Celtic kept things simple. They played in a recognisable 4-3-3 formation, the players knew their roles, they knew where to expect their team-mates to be.
There were one or two defensive slips but with 78% possession Celtic scored four well taken goals.
If a quality striker had been signed the score-line could have been far greater. But a 4-0 win started to heal the scars left by the Nancy experiment.
Yang Hyun-jun and Arne Engels scored well taken first half goals. After the break substitute Ben Nygren and Daizen Maeda scored in the 63rd and 69th minutes.
GOING FORWARD UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT
It was a joy for Celtic fans to take in as they watched their side transformed.
Nancy used one training session to impose his 3-4-3 formation ahead of a top of the table clash.
O’Neill didn’t produce a magic wand, there was no secret formula. He kept the game, the tactics as simple as possible.
O’Neill played down his role in his post match interviews but his influence was clear to see.
Celtic now face four successive away matches including a trip to face Hearts in two weeks time.
O’Neill will find out all about his squad during that run- and will be hoping to have some new faces involved.
Great result and fine performance…
Just the perfect excuse for That Scumbag Lucan not to sign any players !
