Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham have been given a take it or leave it option by Celtic on their pay cuts.
That is the news from Derek McGregor of The Sun, a reporter with a very decent track record of news from inside Celtic.
Over the last 24 hours speculation has been rife that deals for the two coaches was holding up the announcement of Martin O’Neill as manager.
Stephen McGowan of The Herald confirmed that news this morning, probably forcing Celtic into the 12 noon announcement of O’Neill’s 12 month deal. Tellingly there was no reference to O’Neill’s backroom staff.
Between McGowan’s story and the Celtic announcement The Sun delivered some additional detail.
CELTIC chiefs have offered Double-winning coaches Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham substantial wage CUTS to stay as integral members of Martin O’Neill’s backroom staff for next season.
And it’s understood the shocked duo have even had it tabled on a non-negotiable take-it-or-leave it basis.
It’s not expected they will accept the terms bluntly presented and there are now serious question marks over them continuing with their first team roles for the new term.
When Brendan Rodgers resigned in October Maloney stepped up from being Professional Pathway Manager to take first team training.
Fotheringham was in at Lennoxtown before 8am to get started after taking a phone call from Maloney.
When Wilfried Nancy was appointed Maloney returned to his previous role. Fotheringham was back out of football after five weeks at Celtic.
On January 5 they were both back on the training ground at Lennoxtown. Picking up the pieces after Nancy’s disastrous 33 days in charge.
Presumably Nancy and his staff needed to be paid off. The consequence of Nicholson’s ridiculous recruitment.
CELTIC- PRIORITY IS PAYING FOR FAILURES IN THE BOARDROOM
In the 24/25 Celtic accounts Nicholson was paid £821,681. His sidekick Chris McKay was paid £532,690.
Half of that combined £1,354,371 would probably pay the salaries of Maloney and Fotheringham for a year.
While fans wonder what Nicholson and McKay actually do there are no questions about the output of the coaches.
Being a first team coach is a seven days a week job. A concept that Nicholson wouldn’t have a clue about.
As a coach you are constantly watching matches, in person or on TV.
Fotheringham was often pictured with O’Neill watching future opponents and signing targets.
Over the last three transfer windows Nicholson’s strategy has seriously weakened the Celtic squad.
With Nicholson unable to agree contracts for two coaches it looks like Celtic fans are in for another summer of misery as top players are sold off and replaced with projects of the standard of Shin Yamada and Michel-Ange Balikwisha.

Shove it up your arse
Contempt absolute Contempt for faithful servents of the institution of Celtic fc , but what can expect of Desmond corporate greed and austerity fc. Stop giving them your money or you are complicit
Cop yourselves on – it’s the scum Sun who are writing this – once again it shows just how gullible some people are.
Editor: Derek McGregor has a very good track record as mentioned. Not one of the new breed social media types that jumps on any passing rumour. Derek is closer to reality than Celtic Thick News.
An old St Tams bhoy
And Desmond’s shitshow rolls on.
What an embarrassment , two guys that helped get us over the line and they treat them with contempt . They just can’t do the right thing by anyone unless it’s themselves . I’m actually surprised they never offered them to take the national minimum wage and be thankful for it . DISGRACEFUL .
HUNT THE BOARD AND THE DESMONDS, no more kid gloves.
CFC/CSL and all, stop pussyfooting around and deliver some action.
Nicholson is destroying the team how he is still in a job celtic after how bad and clueless as he is the mind boggles if he fks up the summer transfer window he wont have anywhere to hide unless its under desmonds table he has zero clue regarding football on and off the pitch
Typical treatment for Celtic servants from this deplorable board, desmond and his penny pinching but he knows all STs have been snapped up so it’s a win win for the board. On a side note just started watching the opening game and one of the commentators is that little bigot , fuckin mcoisht.
I renewed my seat at the last possible moment with huge reservations about whether I would actually go to the games this season.
I found last season’s fiasco to be an unnecessary strain on my consciousness, where I found it increasingly difficult to attend as I don’t want to spend the rest of ma puff in Bar L for kicking the granny out of some annoying kant of a happy clapper.
And that’s just the tip of an ever increasing iceberg.
I hate this board with a passion. However this story was in the Sun ffs. I’ll save my judgement until I see facts.
If this is true, Martin should walk away, if he has any honour.
The club is in the hands of some astonishingly incompetent and greedy individuals.
The future looks bad,
Lucan should take a cut…
A fu**in throat cut !!!
I don’t think Martin would put up with this if it was true.
Forget all that, the priority transfers this summer must be free transfers of Wilson, Nicholson, Mackay and the security one to some other club that suits their skill level.
Perhaps a Sunday League team if any would take them.
Not
Another
Penny.
