Martin O’Neill has claimed that Celtic’s dug-out screens are too small for him to make decisions!
While Arsene Wenger gained fame for not seeing any contentious incident during his time as Arsenal manager O’Neill has taken a different approach.
In today’s match against Kilmarnock a 15th minute ‘goal’ from Kasper Hogh was disallowed following a VAR check for an incident in the build up.
Mika Baur won a midfield challenge that Beaton viewed clearly on the pitch. Celtic quickly had possession with Camilo Duran and Ben Nygren combining to set up the chance for Hogh.
After three months without scoring the Dane looked to have broke that run.
Unfortunately following a VAR check the on-field decision was overturned.
2 minutes 30 seconds:
QUESTION: Martin, has he (Hogh) got a right to feel a bit aggrieved about the foul that was given earlier in the move. It looked a bit contentious?
MARTIN O’NEILL REPLIED
Do you know what? I have genuinely not seen it back because the little screen that we have is too small for me to see it. You know the we one that we have down on the touch line so I didn’t.
So the minute they’ve not given it you know I I can only go by what the lads were saying they thought it was, they thought it was touch and go.
Either O’Neill didn’t want to upset match officials John Beaton and Grant Irvine or Celtic don’t supply their dug-out with suitable equipment.
Every club in the top divisions have screens that can replay incidents to coaching staff.
Clubs have analysts in the dug out and in studious assessing matches in real time.
During the 15 minute break for half time there will regularly be a recap of first half incidents.
Set pieces that went well, others that should have gone better as players are given evidence of their first half problems.
Equally coaching staff can re-run incidents which will assist in decisions made over substitutions or changes to tactics.
If O’Neill is genuine in his claim that the screens that Celtic use are too small then larger screens should be installed.
Five out of Celtic’s six post LASK signings didn’t make the 20 man squad for today’s match.
O’Neill started with Mika Baur, Camilo Duran, Kasper Hogh and Sam Johnstone in the side. The entire bench was made up of players that were at the club next season.
