It was one of the shortest and strangest of Celtic careers consisting of two substitute appearances and a quick getaway.

Six years ago in his first season in management Neil Lennon was running into a rut as Celtic struggled into the winter period.

The early promise and excitement had floundered with injuries hitting his squad.

Help would soon be at hand in the shape of Freddie Ljungberg but there was one other player coming on the scene with recent Premier League experience.

Step forward Olivier Kapo.

Lennon knew of Kapo from his days at Wigan and Birmingham, as a free agent in December he became more attractive with training facilities provided as the 30-year-old from the Ivory Coast got over a brief spell in France with Boulogne.

The clock was ticking down towards Celtic’s New Year visit to Ibrox, a fixture that was far from appealing.

Kapo was thrown his debut against St Johnstone on St Stephen’s Day as a late late South Korean 1-2 from Ki and Cha kept the restless natives quiet.

The trialist did enough to start the next match, at home to Motherwell three days later but was replaced before half-time by Daryl Murphy.

After that, nothing, not a sighting.

Kapo packed his bags for the next stage of his mystery tour accusing Lennon of going back on a contract promise.

Responding to that the Celtic boss said: “We couldn’t give him a contract on 30 minutes of football, not on the money he was after but we were quite prepared to extend his agreement to the end of the season until he proved his fitness.

There is no doubting his talent — but he didn’t do enough to warrant what he wanted.

I couldn’t go to the board and say I want this guy to have a one-year, two-year, 18-month contract, based on 30 minutes of football. I’d have everybody knocking on the door if it was the case.”

Kapo went on to play at Auxerre, Levadiakos of Greece and Polish side Korona Kielce.
