What’s next for Robbie Keane?

|

Robbie Keane Celtic newsTottenham have reportedly accepted a bid from Birmingham for Robbie Keane.

Whether the Irish striker is prepared to move to St Andrews to help Alex McLeish’s side in the battle against relegation remains to be seen.

Despite starting just two Premiership matches this season and watching the Champions League from the bench Keane doesn’t seem to be in any rush to get out of White Hart Lane.

Major transfers in January are a rarity with the Spurs striker well aware that his next deal could be the last one of his well travelled career.

Whilst Keane remains at Spurs there is always a chance that he could make a return move to Celtic to complete unfinished business.

A year ago the striker arrived at the tail-end of Tony Mowbray’s car crash to find his dream move turn in to a walking nightmare.

Despite knocking in 15 goals in 12 SPL appearances Keane’s impact was largely academic as Neil Lennon dragged Celtic over the finishing line in second place.

Throughout the summer transfer window there was talk of Keane returning to Celtic but for whatever reason no deal was completed.

West Ham, Birmingham, Wolves, Newcastle and Vancouver Whitecaps have all been linked to Keane with Spurs happy to see one of their top earners move on.

The striker has said nothing about his future and left it to others to speculate over where his next move will be.

Celtic’s striking options have been cut down to the bone with only Gary Hooper impressing and hitting double figures.

Anthony Stokes, Daryl Murphy, Georgios Samaras and Shaun Maloney all have various question marks over their ability or fitness.

The option of bringing in a tried and tested striker well capable of scoring two goals from every three games won’t have escaped Neil Lennon’s notice.

Linking Keane and Freddie Ljungberg together would give the club a massive boost and send out a signal that Celtic will leave no stone unturned to succeed this season.

The Scottish Cup tie with Rangers on February 6 is bound to appeal to Keane after the events of his last visit to Ibrox in February last year.

With at least three derby matches to come before the end of the season and a realistic chance of silverware a return to Celtic compares favourably with committing himself to life with Alex McLeish at Birmingham.

Every day of the transfer window that passes without any movement increases the chances of Keane returning to Celtic.

The lessons of the last January transfer window suggest that never say never are the wisest words when it comes to Robbie Keane and Celtic…
