Former Celt sinks Mowbray

|

Craig Beattie celtic newsFormer Celt Craig Beattie sent Tony Mowbray into despair yesterday with an injury time winner for Swansea at Middlesbrough.

The home team should have been comfortable on a 3-1 lead with 15 minutes left to play but Swansea had other ideas.

Ironically it was Mowbray that brought Beattie to England after shelling out £1.5m for the striker in 2007.

“I’ve started six games this year after coming back from injury and scored four goals,” Beattie said

“Joe Allen is going to be a superstar when he’s older and Dobbs ( ex-Rangers Steven Dobbie) has scored plenty of goals in his career as well.

“Guys like Albert Serran and Kemy Agustin have played at the top level – we’re very, very strong you know.

“We have a strong squad and obviously Jazz Richards is going to come on and be a top player as well, he’s in the team at the minute and doing well. So the squad’s very good, very strong.”

The defeat left Mowbray despairing with his side throwing away another winning position due to late goals.

“There was some very poor defending out there today,” the Boro boss admitted. “You should never lose grip of a two-goal lead like that but it was all self-inflicted. We have shot ourselves in the foot.

“It comes down to some very poor decision-making on our part.”

Mowbray’s lack of man management was one of the major factors in his downfall at Celtic but it appears that he hasn’t learned from last season’s mistakes.

Public criticism of players never goes down well- especially when your job is dependent on those players but that didn’t deter Mowbray from airing his frustrations.

He added: “For the penalty that clawed them back into it, it was a tackle in the box that didn’t need to be made.

“Then there was a mistake when the ‘keeper didn’t clear and two men ran into each other, and then for the last goal we stood off and no-one got in front of the lad before he shot.

“When you analyse the game there were huge problems. We had a game plan and to a large extent it worked but then we made some very silly mistakes.

“Now we are looking over our shoulders again. Had we won we could have gone up three, four or five places. Instead we will now have to work very, very hard to make sure we are not looking over our shoulders at the end.”
