Craig Thomson Celtic newsHibs star Ivan Sproul has launched a blazing attack on referee Craig Thomson following yesterday’s controversial Aberdeen v Hibs match at Pittodrie.

Thomson awarded Aberdeen a soft looking penalty from which Scott Vernon scored the only goal of the game then ordered off Aberdeen’s Peter Pawlett seven minutes later.

Sproul was the closest Hibs player to the penalty incident and despite knowing that his comments are likely to earn him an appearance in front of the SFA wasn’t afraid to speak out about Thomson’s display.

“You get into trouble for speaking out but I am giving my honest opinion on what was a shocking decision,” the Hibs winger stated.

“Players get punished for other actions and maybe it will take putting a referee down to the First Division for a week or two because that was nothing short of a shambles.

“That was one of the poorest refereeing performances I’ve seen for a long time.

“He made the sending-off because of what happened at the penalty. I don’t even think it was a straight red. The SFA will have to take a long look at the ref’s display.”

Hibs boss Pat Fenlon was equally puzzled by Thomson’s performance adding: “It wasn’t a penalty and it was a very soft red card for Aberdeen.

“I asked the ref about it at the end of the game yet he didn’t give me an answer.”

Thomson took up a full time educational role with the SFA during the summer and is regarded as Scotland’s leading referee.

Tomorrow the SFA are expected to announce who will referee the December 28 clash between Celtic and Rangers with Thomson having taken charge of the last three matches between the clubs.

Craig Thomson- A man with an ego that knows no bounds, other than Brian Winter he is the best ref we have- which speaks volumes for the others.

  • weemarty says:

It’s about time the sfa came clean and admitted there is NO diciplinary proceedures in place for poor refereeing. If there was then we would have no referee’s available for games. They’re all poor Thomson, madden, colum, the list goes on.
Time for the SFA to get their heads out of the sand and let us know how they’re diciplined

  • Stevie says:

    I would sack the lot.
Better with amateur refs than this bunch in saying that the Shame always seem To get a good one funny that.

  • Patman says:

What he has said isint far off what fat Sally said a few weeks back, so there’s no way he’ll be brought before the panel. Unless the SFA are bias he will?

  • Mike Bhoyle says:

    Patman….behave yourself…this is Scotland remember…
he’ll get the book thrown at him.
Sleekit will get touted for a knighthood.
    That’s how it works.

  • Joe says:

The SFA will interview Thomson first to make sure he understands what he he’s to do to help ailing Rangers. If he gets the answers corect, he’ll be in charge of the game on the 28th.

  • Stevie says:

No doubt he will be joe.
Who in there right mind decided to have the Shame at Celtic park on the night of the 28th –unbelievable.

  • Krys says:

I’m actually curious to see what happens this week with this. The same player who dived for the penalty was the man who was sent off for making no contact at all.

So what do the SFA do with that? Retract the red card and then given him a two match ban?

More importantly, they should be demoting Thompson after another shocking performance.
