Gordon Smith Rangers sackedGordon Smith and Ali Russell have become the first casualties of Rangers going into administration with both executives being made redundant tonight.

Smith and Russell were amongst Craig Whyte’s first appointments after taking over at Ibrox and the axing of former Chief Executive Martin Bain.

The role of both men was never made clear although both had recently been deployed on globe trotting missions to promote the Rangers brand in Brazil and India.

Rangers went into administration on February 14 with further redundancies expected as administrators Duff & Phelps attempt to cut costs and avoid liquidation.

In a statement issued through the Rangers website Smith said: “I would make the point that I was very frustrated in my job and unable to fulfil the job specification which was originally outlined to me.

“This was to control the major aspects of the football department outwith the first team operations.”

The loss of Smith leaves Ally McCoist even more isolated with Dave King the only executive remaining from David Murray’s time at the club.

Smith was previously CE of the SFA and is expected to resume his media career.

No doubt “wiggy” will be back on the radio giving his “impartial” (laughable) comments on his team.

  • Brian says:

Spot on Marty, if he gets his job at the Beeb back then its a joke. They’ll no doubt be unable to avoid the temptation to get him back hoping he’ll spill the beans. He was never taking to task for anything he did at the SFA when he came back to the Beeb so this will be no different.

Sorry to see the wig go….he was a joke and just the kind of twat I like to see Rangers appoint. Hopefully they will be able to hang onto to other numpties like John Brown, Neil Murray and Jim Sinclair….a spot the brain cell competition surely.

Smith must have failed to get fans in India to guard old Dheli’s walls….probably the only man in Scottish football who could make Crook Whyte look almost knowledgeable.

      Brilliant Williebhoy, Dheli’s Walls.

I remember Smith as a pundit on BBC tv the night of the original Beachball Sunday at Ibrokes. Sat in the studio SICK. He even said, “the Celtic Supporters should really study their geography. Seville is nowhere near the beach”

      Thick, thick, half-wit Hun.
