Labour MP accuses Craig Whyte

Labour MP Thomas Docherty last night used a House of Commons debate to accuse Rangers chairman Craig Whyte of being a liar.

Only two Scottish MPs bothered turning up for the debate where it was revealed that Alex Salmond was fully briefed by HMRC into the extent of Rangers non payment of taxes.

Once Whyte had placed Rangers in administration the First Minister expressed his sympathy for the club and hoped that a compromise could be agreed with HMRC.

Salmond has avoided the subject since then but was on the receiving end in last night’s debate as the extent of Rangers tax problems was debated with Whyte the centre of attention.

The complete failure of the SFA and SPL to vet Whyte has caused serious cash problems for four SPL clubs with Dunfermline fan Docherty particularly scathing about the way Whyte has been allowed to operate.

The MP for Dunfermline and West Fife said: “I just hope that the Treasury is looking at ways to ensure that a fit and proper person test does not just mean that you don’t get liars like Mr Whyte in charge of clubs but that club finances going forward are something that we can all have some comfort in.”

Referring to the money that Rangers owe to other clubs Docherty added: “This money does not and never has belonged to Rangers, it’s not only morally wrong to hold it, it’s nothing short of theft.

“I would like HMRC to proactively contact the other 11 clubs to establish what liabilities they have as a result of Rangers going into administration.

“I believe it is right and proper all 12 clubs should meet by the end of the season their obligations to the taxpayer, but they need to be given space to sort out the mess caused by Craig Whyte.”
